"Mr President, I am voting in favour of the report by Mrs Kauppi on equality between women and men in the European Union. In her report Mrs Kauppi calls on Member States to fight against inequality in the employment of women and men. Inequality is most obvious in the area of employment. The average difference in salaries between women and men in the EU is 15%, and in some countries the difference is as high as 30%. As many as 32% of women have part-time jobs, compared with 7% of men. Attention should be given to the situation of female immigrants and women from ethnic minorities, older women and single mothers, who are marginalised and discriminated against in many areas of life. We should fight against gender stereotyping, which is seen at work, in education and in the media. It would also be good to prepare information campaigns, so that women could themselves deal with situations that insult their dignity."@en1
