Junilistan considers that equality between women and men is a fundamental democratic issue which must be prioritised in all countries throughout the world.
The report contains many proposals on how equality should be achieved, some of them focusing on employment policy measures, the participation of women in political life and training plans of various kinds. However, it emerges clearly that, as usual, it is a question of increasing the financial resources of the Union and its power and of launching costly campaigns under Union auspices. The EU institutions are not the right bodies for matters of this kind. Harmonisation often results in a step backwards for those countries which have advanced furthest, since the starting basis varies greatly from one country to another.
Equality between men and women must be a goal for all the Member States to strive for, but the matter must be dealt with at national level. We have chosen to vote against this report, since the intention is to extend the powers of the EU at the expense of the sovereign states within the European Union."@en1
