"It is unacceptable for anyone in the EU to be discriminated against on grounds of his or her origin or religion. Sentiments in some EU Member States indicate that discrimination is a frequent phenomenon. We are familiar with the example from the past of the discrimination against, and gradual assimilation of, the Slovak-speaking population in Hungary by establishments of a wide range of political hues – fascist, communist, socialist and right-wing – where only 37 000 now remain of the 500 000 Slovak-speaking citizens in the 1920s. On the other hand, citizens who migrate to EU Member States should not create new ethnic settlements but should integrate completely and adopt the host country’s principles of freedom and democracy. Some of my British colleagues recently mentioned a situation where in Britain certain citizens publicly proclaimed the slogan ‘not British but Muslim’ on t-shirts at a peaceful meeting. The transposition of an EU directive into the law of the Member States must comply with the highest possible standards, and it is right that the Member States are required to notify the existence of anti-discrimination provisions even though some citizens do not know about them and have little legal awareness in this regard."@en1
