"I voted for the resolution on Burma but I have serious reservations about its non-committal nature. We have to praise India for its support of reforms in Burma, and we have to adopt serious measures against China, which is blocking the United Nations mandate to begin negotiations with the military junta. China is one of the largest supporters of dictatorial regimes. Because the Union imposed sanctions a long time ago, Burma’s economy now depends on China. I am therefore asking the Union to act on the threat of imposing sanctions against China, unless the country condemns the junta. If we are serious about the protection of human rights and democracy on a global scale, we must not hesitate. China places a great deal of importance on having good trade relations with Europe and we want our values to be respected. Protection of democracy may clash with the economic interests of European investors in China but it will be a temporary situation. If trading is to be fair, it is necessary to stand one’s ground and not to give in. I regret the procrastination of the left-wing Members with regard to this issue during the Monday sitting, when they tried to block the vote on the joint resolution: as if they regretted that the support of Western Europe helped to bring down the communist regimes in Eastern Europe in 1968."@en1
