". Under Article 24(2) of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, the death penalty shall not apply under any circumstances. As we have often said, we agree with the move to present to the 62nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly a proposal for a resolution seeking the adoption of a universal moratorium on the death penalty – a moratorium which apparently already has the support of 95 countries – as being a step towards abolishing the death penalty. Millions of men and women throughout the world long for the abolition of the death penalty, and an increasing number of countries have established a moratorium against its application or abolished it entirely in their internal legal order. As we have pointed out before, that step would be an advance for civilisation which it is important to extend to other countries. Our initiative can help in this connection. In this way we are adding our voice to those who are constantly seeking and striving to put an end to the culture of violence, trivialisation of death, aggression and war."@en1
