"Mr President, I too would like to thank the rapporteur for an excellent and very balanced report. A number of points have already been touched on. As a member of the Committee on Women’s Rights and of the Agriculture Committee, I shall concern myself primarily with the position of women in agriculture.
What strikes one first is the invisibility of many women working in the agricultural sector. Women hold 40% of all agricultural jobs, but many official statistics, including those of Eurostat, Commissioner, only look at either female employees or female employers. They take no account of assisting spouses, even though those women make up the largest category of labour on the many family farms of north-west Europe. Their contribution to the business is significant and they often help too to develop the activities of the farm and of the countryside. So I urge Eurostat to make this large group of women show up in the official statistics. I urge the Commission to take account of this large category of female labour in its policy-making.
Moreover, it is precisely this category of working partners who encounter practical day-to-day problems in some Member States, for example in building up pension rights, in accessing social security, if their farm ceases operation, if they get divorced, and if they need to take sick leave or maternity leave, though I am happy to say that in the Netherlands action is being taken to remedy this situation. I would draw the Commission’s attention to the project ‘
’ (‘It’s yours by right’), launched in my country with ESF aid to highlight the obstacles which these partners face. I hope the Commission will take its conclusions into account when framing future policy, so that, thanks to this essential female workforce, we can continue to have strong European agriculture and a viable countryside."@en1
