"Mr President, the time has come for Member States finally to take decisive steps to eliminate outdated models of behaviour and decision-making, particularly in administration, in order to pay more attention to the issue of gender in all policies. Differences in the treatment of men and women still exist. They result, for example, in low incomes and discrimination against pregnant women and young mothers. Even though it is a promising sign, as regards employment of women, that, since 2000, 6 out of the 8 million new jobs created in the European Union have gone to women, the difference in pay between men and women in the European Union still averages 15% and, in some countries, is as high as 30%. It is unacceptable that women, just because of motherhood, which is a responsibility of both parents, should be treated worse than men in the labour market, which then affects their career, income and, later on, pension payments. The stereotypes concerning gender have to be overcome and it is for this reason that I am in favour of the proposal to create a budget line, within the framework of cohesion policy, dedicated to financing measures aimed at promoting equal opportunities and at financing research on the effects of political strategies on women’s lives. I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Mrs Kauppi for an excellent report."@en1
