"I sincerely congratulate Mrs Kauppi on this very good report, which is the result of close cooperation with all members of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality. The rapporteur has underlined very well the importance of implementing a policy of equality between men and women as part of the Lisbon Strategy. One of the objectives of the Lisbon Agenda is to increase the number of women working and in employment. At the same time, however, we are incapable of formally recognising the informal work carried out by women that is unpaid. We know women who work to ensure solidarity between generations, who act as volunteers and who create tolerable conditions for social relationships. However, this informal work is unpaid. We do not wish to recognise it officially because we do not see the money that circulates around it. In my view, this logic constitutes a form a discrimination against women. I believe that it might a matter of for our friend Mr Špidla to recognise the informal unpaid work of women. That would also resolve the many problems experienced by minorities, which we spoke about a moment ago. To help us make progress on this issue, in Europe and around the world we have individuals and institutes that offer us mathematical and statistical models and the means of applying them in our policies. Among them is Gary Beck, the Nobel Prize Laureate in Economics, to whom reference has already been made several times. Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, I have taken this opportunity to draw attention to the real problem of equality between men and women."@en1
