"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the issue of equal opportunities for women and men is still relevant in the EU. Few changes were made in 2006. Women’s salaries still remain 15 percent lower than men’s salaries in the EU. Women returning to the labour market or climbing the career ladder face significant problems.
The Council Directive of 1975 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the application of the principle of equal pay for men and women has not yet been implemented. The Member States do not show any political will to solve the problems of gender equality and integration in the work-place. Therefore, I agree with the report’s proposal that the Commission should carry out a study on how Member States implement Community legislation in the area of equality and take appropriate action in the event that it is not implemented.
Speaking of integration in the work-place, I would like to emphasise the importance of good practice and its dissemination, especially in improving the possibilities for women to participate in politics and the political decision-making process. My country, Lithuania, has experience in this. The Commission and effective use of the European Social Fund can contribute to the dissemination of such practice."@en1
