"Mr President, the report on equality between women and men is additional proof that equal rights policies have an important role to play. Both women and men have the right to play an active part in all areas of public life and have the right to have this enshrined in law. Dignity is not, however, experienced just through legislative acts, but also through appropriate levels of material, spiritual and emotional support, especially within a healthy family structure.
Unfortunately contemporary propaganda devalues the role of marriage, the family and the mother and instils a feeling of guilt in those girls and women who want to stay at home and look after children. Instead of providing assistance, legal protection, instead of valuing the role of the wife and the mother bringing up children, there is an objectification of women, they are overloaded with expectations, and this is compounded by widely propagated views concerning contraception, abortion, extreme individualism, conflict between parents and children and even by extending retirement age, which leads to mental and physical breakdown.
It is important constantly to remind people that equality, equal rights of women and men, does not mean being the same as men. All forms of masculinisation of women, competing with men on every level, impoverishes not just women, but also society as a whole, and it distorts the richness and inner value of both femininity and masculinity.
Particular sensitivity is needed today to avoid actions that are divorced from people’s real needs and aspirations and to overcome the excesses of individualism and moral relativism. It is vital, especially in situations where there is no basic infrastructure for economic growth, to combat discrimination in many areas of life. For this reason, social organisations as well as laws should provide assistance in fulfilling our obligations, instead of indoctrination and unification that create unrest and conflict. This is why I am calling for the dignity of every human being to be respected, not just with regard to equal pay, but also as regards respect for traditions, cultures, religions and values that are important to national and cultural identity, which will enrich contemporary Europe."@en1
