"Mr President, I am grateful to Mrs Buitenweg for the outstanding job she has done on this report. Discrimination and racism on all fronts, whether in the job market, in sports clubs or at school, is an attack on the values which we in Europe hold dear. What we need is a combined approach at all levels, European, national and local. Legislators, politicians and victims of discrimination themselves all have an important part to play here. We must make Europe’s citizens aware of their rights and the means at their disposal for insisting on those rights. I urge the Commission to act on its responsibilities and see to it that the Racial Equality Directive is implemented promptly and properly. The Directive is a step in the right direction, but its efficacy depends on how well it is implemented by Member States. And I call on the Commission to show the moral leadership which Barroso himself announced in 2004, and which is sorely needed. Discrimination is still a routine occurrence in Europe in 2007, the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All. Now above all, at a time when some groups are certainly not having an easy ride – I am thinking particularly of the position of Muslims in Europe – we need people who will stand up against discrimination and be counted in all areas. I too would like to see the Commission extend anti-discrimination measures to all conceivable forms of discrimination."@en1
