".
The Union’s competition policy is vitally important in an open market economy.
Measures in the area of fair trade in goods and services – for example, price reductions, increased quality, choice for consumers and the important development of technological innovation – are crucial prerequisites if we are to make the most of the openness of the markets.
We voted today for greater clarification of competition rules and greater legal certainty, in order that maximum benefit can be derived from all the measures that have been taken to improve the effectiveness, transparency and consistency of this policy. The current approach seeks to go beyond a merely formal outlook with regard to competition rules, so that we can better assess the actual or potential effects of certain practices or structural changes in companies. Decentralisation is a further positive trend in this regard. I therefore voted in favour of the Ferreira report."@en1
