In the Nordic countries and in many of the EU’s new Member States, we have a long, Slavic-inspired history and tradition of vodka production, in which alcohol is manufactured from potatoes and grain. Champagne and cognac are strictly defined. It must be possible for the same rule to apply to vodka – the spirit produced from grain or potatoes. If no one knows what vodka is, we cannot make informed choices. Consumers are entitled to expect vodka to be based on certain ingredients, just as we all expect wine to be produced from grapes, and gin from juniper berries.
