"Mr President, a memorial to the countless victims of Communism and of Communist governments was recently unveiled in Washington. Here, in our Parliament building, a modest memorial plaque commemorates the tens of thousands of innocent Baltic victims of the first mass deportations of June 1941, carried out by the Soviet Red Empire, from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia – countries which at that time were occupied and which today are Member States of the EU. The plaque was unveiled in the spring, following an initiative by Members and thanks to the understanding and good will of our President, Hans-Gert Pöttering, and of other people involved in the decision.
I should like to invite all colleagues – not only Members from the Baltic States – to gather at 10.00 tomorrow in front of this memorial plaque, by the flags at the visitors’ reception, for a few minutes, where we will lay flowers and reflect in silence on our hopes for a better world."@en1
