"Mr President, I would like to bring to the attention of the House the serious flooding that occurred in Northern Ireland on Tuesday afternoon last week. Many areas were left under water in a very short period of time. Schools had to be evacuated and old people’s homes and even hospitals had to be closed. Hundreds of emergency calls were made within a period of two hours and many people had to be evacuated from their homes because of the flood damage. The Fire and Rescue Service was stretched to the limit, but I commend them on their excellent work.
I would ask the Commission to mobilise the Solidarity Fund to give short-term assistance to those areas affected. This would send a very positive message to the affected areas in Belfast, Ballynahinch, Saintfield, Omagh, Crossgar, Cookstown and Dungannon, to name but a few, and everywhere in Northern Ireland where these flash floods occurred."@en1
