"These days, the media in a number of European cities have been informing us about disasters caused by extreme weather fluctuations. Hot June weather triggers storm rainfall, causing among other things considerable concern and enormous damage to people’s property in Slovakia’s regions. What are the causes of such extreme weather? Over the past 50 years we have created systems that quickly remove rainwater and keep the agricultural and urban landscape dry. Rainwater used to cool down the countryside and sustained a stable climate. Heat radiated by the extremely hot and dry land pushes clouds towards cooler mountain areas, where they produce precipitation causing extreme rainfall and floods. Colleagues, as a member of the temporary Committee on Climate Change, I will be promoting solutions enabling the retention of more rainwater in the arid regions of all continents. I am convinced that this offers a way of combating climate change in a less costly and more efficient manner, which will cause less disruption. I believe I will be able to find much support for this idea in the European Parliament."@en1
