As a Member of the European Parliament elected by the Pensioners’ Party, I was immediately interested in the situation of pensioners in Japan. To my great surprise, I read on the front pages of all the newspapers that 30 million contributions paid by workers had disappeared following an error at the Japanese social security agency’s computing centre and many Japanese workers will not receive their correct pensions. What a serious error that was in this technological age by such an advanced and important country! Might the same thing have happened in Europe, however? Would it not be a good idea to check whether the data for all our workers in our 27 Member States have been kept to ensure that their pensions will be secure, since every worker’s pension ought to be secure?"@en1
