"Mr President, I wish to refer to last Friday’s reality show on organ donation on a Dutch TV station. Prior to the broadcasting of the show the relevant Dutch minister said in a statement to his parliament that the programme was inappropriate and unethical. However, the Dutch Prime Minister in a press conference referred to the constitutional right to freedom of expression, as a result of which government action to interfere with the programme’s content was impossible. The show went ahead and at the end it was revealed that it was a hoax. Freedom of expression is important and must be safeguarded. However, openly and consistently lying to the public, using such an emotive subject in order to gain publicity, is a gross abuse of such freedom. I call on the President of this House to use his good offices in order to take the appropriate action he deems necessary so that such unacceptable and dangerous behaviour by the press is not allowed to occur again. In answer to Mrs Krupa, let me say that brain-dead patients are dead and cannot be killed, but their organs can save the lives of many sick people."@en1
