lpv:translated text	"Mr President, as a medical doctor, I set great store by transplant surgery, which saves the lives of many patients who would die if they did not receive a transplant. It must be said, however, that Mr Kyprianou’s statement on the introduction of the directive laying down minimum standards and the European organ donor card, notably as regards the deletion of ethical amendments from a range of Union documents, may well lead to various kinds of abuse, particularly in view of the fact that euthanasia is legal in several European countries. The European organ donor card and especially presumed consent in an environment of moral laxity carries with it the risk that no effort will be made to heal the sick, and that their lives may even be terminated in order to obtain organs, as recently stated in the press. In such circumstances, consent to organ transplants after the donor’s death should be confirmed with the consent of the deceased family and those closest to them once they are in receipt of a document confirming brain stem death. This would go some way towards preventing abuse."@en1
