"Mr President, for some years jellyfish have been invading the Mediterranean shores. Many people have to be treated for stings, which cause pain, inflammation and other disorders. There are even some places where the authorities advise against swimming in the sea. This plague is a symptom of the imbalance being suffered by the Mediterranean ecosystem. The abuse of certain fishing practices is leading to the disappearance of species such as bluefin tuna – which compete with jellyfish to consume zooplankton — or the loggerhead turtle, which are their natural predators. The warming up of coastal waters – a result of climate change – and their higher salt content – as a result of a lower intake of fresh water due to drought – also contribute to this over-abundance of jellyfish. The experts warn that it is necessary to tackle the problem immediately; otherwise it will increase year on year. The government of my country – Spain – is implementing studies and action plans. We are faced with an environmental problem that affects all of the coastal States and that needs to be tackled at Community level. This problem is having an extremely negative effect on the tourist industry throughout the Mediterranean basin, and this Parliament and the other Community institutions must therefore pay more attention to it."@en1
