"Madam President, the Commission intends to stop the maize intervention scheme right from the 2007/2008 economic year. The apparent aim is to avoid the surplus from increasing. Unfortunately, this step is ill-considered and pointless, particularly as the Commission has agreed to import genetically modified maize in large quantities. The Commission does not seem to comprehend the consequences of this decision, both for the cereal market and for the pig meat market. In my view, the Commission should think and act differently, which is to continue payments for environmental crops, and impose a complete ban on genetically modified maize, and protect our market from such products from third markets. This will be a healthier and more responsible attitude to the natural environment, and will give an opportunity to increase demand for our agricultural products."@en1
