". In its talks with Turkey, the European Union has, I do believe, always acted with reference to the list of criteria to which I have just referred, and it also, on earlier occasions, highlighted ways in which the country might be given support and in which developments to that end might be set in motion within it. I do believe that the European Union must be able to expect compliance with the framework requisite for accession and that, ultimately, the actors in Turkey become aware that decisions on such matters rest primarily with politicians rather than with the armed forces. One important point – and one of which you will be aware – is that, in the course of this dispute, an appeal has been lodged with the Turkish constitutional court, and this – as the European Union has indeed stated – is the way down which the country must go. I do not believe that more can be done at the present time."@en1
