"We believe that human rights are universal and inviolable and that they need to be among the foundation stones of all societies. Unfortunately, violations occur in many places around the world, including in the EU Member States. A large part of the European Parliament and its Members see themselves as the guarantors of human rights in the world. These Members must not be thought any the less of, because they undoubtedly have good intentions, and it is essential to fight for these fundamental rights. The difficulty arises when human rights are used as a means of promoting the EU’s positions on, for example, developing a common foreign and security policy. We have voted against quite a few amendments that we basically think are logical, fair and, in certain cases, also desirable but that should not under any circumstances be tabled, or decided on, by this House."@en1
