"We are citizens and deputies of countries where the use of our mother tongue is considered a fundamental value. We do not know what to make of the news I heard recently, according to which there is a candidate country where they want to dissolve a local government because its representatives have decided to make it possible for citizens to use the local minority language to take care of their official business. Similarly, it is incomprehensible to us that a mayor should face legal proceedings because he wrote a greeting card in a minority language to the citizens who voted for him.
Mr President, I am talking about Turkey. I think that we need to verify these stories, and make it clear to our Turkish partners that the Copenhagen criteria are binding on all of us. I hope we will be able to take effective action."@en1
