"The present administration in Washington is in a hurry to set up an anti-missile shield. It would cover part of the European Union if defensive missiles and radars were to be installed in the Czech Republic and Poland. All this is expected to cost 58 billion dollars. This amount of money, used differently, could help millions of starving people and change the very nature of countries proclaiming unpredictable dangers. The governments and people of European countries have more than a few misgivings about such plans, which could lead to a new arms race and to dangers for the whole region. Lithuania is in this region; however, there has not been much public debate concerning this topic in the new Member States. Washington's plans should be openly and frankly discussed by NATO and EU countries, and Russia should be included in the discussions as well. Unilateral policies without regard to possible dangers and consequences have more than once created situations that were difficult to wade out of. For example, the ‘Star Wars’ projects were a product of the Cold War era. To go ahead with them now would mean to concede that the world is still split into irreconcilable camps, and that we are again seeking solutions based on force and arms."@en1
