"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to thank Mr Solana for the information he has given us this morning. However, it is apparent once again from our debate that the European Union lacks a foreign policy and therefore lacks a common security and defence policy. I would therefore like to express my complete solidarity with the United Kingdom over the issue of the sailors detained in Iran, a solidarity that must also be expressed in other countries. I would point out, however, that if we had a common foreign and defence policy we would without doubt have far greater influence in resolving international issues. The absence of a common foreign policy also means that in certain States – my own included – because of individual positions, even affairs of domestic politics take on a rather serious significance. If we continue down the road of the constitutional treaty, begun by Chancellor Merkel, I believe we will be doing a very positive thing. I would like to point out a fundamental issue to Mr Solana. Several times this morning mention has been made of the question of the possible US missile defence system, to be located on the territory of the Republic of Poland and of the Czech Republic. It would appear to me – I do not know whether it is true, however – that among other things certain States of the Union will probably not be taken into consideration in respect of such a missile defence system, for example Italy and Greece. I have heard differing positions on this matter, and rightly so. Although I personally am in favour of this system, I believe, Mr Solana, that it is important to obtain real information, including that which you have chosen to withhold. I therefore invite you to provide our subcommittee with all possible information without delay."@en1
