"Mr President, over the last few months, all airline passengers in the EU have had to put their toothpaste and shampoo in a plastic bag before going through the security check. It is a nuisance, and it has caused still longer waiting times at airports. It has to be asked whether there is any thinking person who believes that this procedure is likely to prevent even one terrorist act. The sole effect, if any, of such bureaucracy will be to make other places containing large numbers of people – for example, buses and underground systems - the replacement targets for acts of terrorism. Instead, all our efforts should be put into preventing terrorism by removing the causes of the hatred and bitterness that are the breeding grounds for terrorism.
How did matters go so badly wrong? It is because the Commission rushed these arrangements through on the basis of secret memoranda of which the citizens were unaware and the quality of which the citizens’ elected representatives were unable to verify. I must therefore urge the Commission, in the strongest possible terms, to stop being so secretive and to reconsider these arrangements."@en1
