"Within the framework of the recent spectacular increase in the number of obese and overweight people within the European Union, I would like to warmly welcome the Commission Green Paper as well as Mrs Ries’ report. The obesity growth rate has indeed already reached a dramatic level within the Union. The issue should therefore be addressed seriously by establishing an EU Action Plan for the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Not only have we to cope with the bad consumer habits and the lack of physical activity, but all the economic consequences have to be addressed appropriately.
As a matter of fact, it has been demonstrated that many deaths and illnesses could be avoided with the use of appropriate diets and daily physical exercise. Not only would lives be saved, but it would help decrease the financial burden on national budgets, as the socio-economic impact of diseases relating to the problems of being overweight is said to account for between 4 and 7% of the Member States’ total health expenditure. The economic consequences of obesity have not yet been fully assessed. Obesity is a genuine disease, a real challenge for the Union, for the health of its citizens, and for consumer habits."@en1
