lpv:translated text	"Mr President, I would like to express my support for all the activities of the European institutions intended to foster growth in the fields of employment and social solidarity and especially for those activities related to PROGRESS, the new Community programme we are currently discussing. I hope that this programme will not turn into yet another ineffective instrument, swallowing up our joint resources. I hope that instead, it will contribute directly to changing the difficult situation that many European Union countries face in this area. I would like to highlight the fact that the issue at stake here is preserving the European social model in the face of a demographic slump that is spreading throughout Europe. The situation in the Scandinavian countries proves it is possible to implement this model at the same time as maintaining a reasonable level of economic growth. Of course, the key to success in Scandinavia is a high employment rate, which usually stands at above 70% for both men and women. Meanwhile, we know that these rates are significantly lower in the majority of the Member States. In Poland, for example, the employment rate stands at barely 51% for men and 46% for women. It seems very clear that it is absolutely vital to provide support in the field of employment, especially in the new Member States. The problem of poverty and social exclusion is another very important matter. We cannot allow a situation to persist where people are living in poverty, or going hungry, at the heart of Europe, which is one of the richest areas of the globe. In Poland, over 10% of the population live below the poverty line. I hope that the PROGRESS programme will contribute to improving the situation. Wealthy Europe ought to show more solidarity towards social groups which find themselves in a very difficult financial situation."@en1
