lpv:translated text	"Madam President, we must firstly welcome the proposal presented on the initiative of Mrs Gröner and the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, which promotes this specific programme, since in this way the scale of the problem is being acknowledged and specific measures to prevent and combat gender violence are being proposed. We must provide women with the means and resources required to escape a reality which, year after year, kills hundreds of women from all countries of the Union. Violence against women and children is a violation of basic fundamental rights and, furthermore, we must not forget that this violation is all the more serious when it affects certain groups, such as minorities and people living in poverty or the disabled. Given the alarming statistics on the victims of this violence, we must carry out a genuine social revolution, since we cannot forget that, behind the statistics and the numbers, there lies the history of thousands of women who every day have to suffer at the hands of those who abuse them merely because they are women. We must therefore strongly defend a specific programme which makes progress towards resolving a social problem with regard to which all public powers must act to promote a change that leads to a more egalitarian society. The Spanish Government has implemented a law against gender violence, with a clear commitment to combat this social scourge. Though it is true that that law cannot put an end overnight to the reality suffered by women, it offers significant support. This is the direction that the rest of the Union must take, making decisive commitments in the conviction that to do nothing at this point would mean turning our backs on thousands of women who are expecting us to respond."@en1
