"I would like to say what a pleasure it is to have the opportunity to put a question to the Council in the new Presidency and offer my warmest congratulations and support – I am sure along with all our colleagues – to the Finnish Presidency, which we know will be a very happy and successful one for the European Union.
I thank the President-in-Office for that comprehensive and very helpful reply. I am particularly grateful for the comment that cooperation has been somewhat sporadic and informal in the past and that perhaps there might be a way of strengthening cooperation in connection with this ever-growing crime.
I wonder if I might draw the President-in-Office’s attention, however, to the recent April 2006 report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, on trafficking in persons and global patterns in trafficking in persons. Since hostage-taking and kidnappings are not confined to the failing states or states in complex emergencies, such as Iran, they are the key link in the chain to organised crime trafficking and particularly therefore to international terrorism. With this in mind, I draw the President-in-Office’s attention to the fact that of the top 11 incidents of reporting of origin countries of human trafficking ..."@en1
