". Air transport is the most commonly used method of long distance travel, yet the emissions from aviation run counter to the global objective of reducing emissions. The measures proposed in this report, especially emission charging and emission trading licenses, strike me as an appropriate way of addressing the problem of the influence of aviation. Another important proposal in the report is the inclusion of internal flights and all flights that start or finish in the EU, with a view to preventing market imbalances. The report also proposes that a single European airspace be set up, which will make it possible to cut down on air routes, given that more direct flights will involve less gas emission. There is one detail, however, to take into account, which is the unique context of the remote and outermost regions. I am therefore supporting the report because the amendment providing for special attention to be paid to the outermost regions and remote regions has been adopted. Such regions would have been seriously harmed had the new aviation charges been applied uniformly across the European area. Given that access to these regions is difficult and time-consuming, air transport is extremely important to them."@en1
