"Mr President, I should like to denounce before the European Parliament today's unacceptable decision by FIFA to suspend the Hellenic Football Federation and to ban the staging of international matches in Greece, the country which organised such spectacular Olympic Games and in which the sporting ideal was born.
In its response to a question about the legal framework of professional football, the competent Commissioner, Mr Figel, told me that the national authorities are basically responsible for clarifying the legal framework relating to the staging of sports at Member State level. The Commission, as guardian of the Treaties, has to ensure that Community law is fully respected and applied.
FIFA has passed a decision that undermines this vertical relationship between the European Union and the Member States and is unacceptable. The Commissioner said, and I quote, that FIFA and UEFA, insofar as they are engaged in economic activities, must ensure that they comply with the legislation of the European Community. We have case law."@en1
