"Globalisation offers a number of opportunities, especially for reducing poverty. Trade and technical cooperation both help strengthen poor countries’ economies. At the same time, there are risks and problems. The poorest countries are often in no position to participate in economic cooperation because of a lack of capacity and so forth and are in danger of getting left even further behind.
What is more, environmental legislation at international level, as well as in many poor countries, leaves a lot to be desired, leading to a rapid increase in waste products, as well as in over-exploitation and in the unsustainable use of a variety of natural resources such as forests and fish, and all these developments are intensified through swiftly growing trade. These problems must be got to grips with as soon as possible if the advantages of globalisation are not to be turned into disadvantages."@en1
