". I and my British Conservative colleagues support strong transatlantic relations, both politically and economically. However, the issue of an absolute ban on the death sentence remains a conscience-based issue for individual MEPs. Nevertheless, we all condemn the inappropriate and excessive use of the death penalty in countries such as China and Iran. We believe that issues of crimes against international humanitarian law should not be dealt with by the International Criminal Court but should be dealt with by UN ad hoc Tribunals. Furthermore, we do not believe that an immediate closure of Guantanamo Bay is desirable or feasible while the war on terrorism remains a priority for both the United States and the European Union. However, in the longer term it would be in the US's interest to do so."@en1
