"Mr President, last night was the first anniversary of the death of a great man and a great European, Pope John Paul II. I am grateful for the opportunity to pay tribute to a man who was and will remain a symbol of interfaith dialogue: between Christianity and Judaism, between Christianity and Islam. John Paul II is also a symbol of tolerance and respect for all people, irrespective of race, nationality, gender, social class or financial status. A Pope who came from Central and Eastern Europe, he repeatedly stressed the unity of Europe, even during the times of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain. In Santiago de Compostela in Spain, some 20 years ago, he spoke of Europe as representing unity in diversity. It is my hope that those words have remained relevant to this day."@en1
