". I and my British Conservative colleagues fully support all measures within the Lisbon Strategy which genuinely enhance the competitiveness of European economies. This requires real economic reform that delivers more growth, flexible labour markets and higher employment throughout the EU. While we are fully supportive of the efforts of the President of the Commission and some Member States to reduce burdens on business and impediments to job creation, we are concerned that some of the measures outlined in the resolution could lead to higher costs on business and detract from the over-riding priority of making Europe more competitive in the global market place and thus significantly reducing unemployment levels. We cannot support those suggestions in the resolution that would lead to a Financial Perspective higher than agreed at the European Council in December 2005. On these and other grounds, we have decided to abstain on the resolution."@en1
