". I naturally voted in favour of this report, which encourages fishing methods that are more respectful of the environment. The priority today is to achieve a reduction in the intensity of fishing activity in order to allow stocks to replenish. This is a sensitive subject, we know, but it is urgent. 46% of the 28 000 species of fish surveyed in the world are threatened. Furthermore, the United Nations programme for the assessment of ecosystems stresses that 25% of commercial species are over-exploited. We must clearly take account of socio-economic imperatives and not penalise the fishing sector, which is already subject to excessive constraints. Reducing fishing activity is acceptable if it is linked to compensations. However, other measures may provide significant results, such as strengthening the fight against pollution from ships or promoting sustainable fishing methods. The sustainability of fisheries resources is an essential objective, and that is the principle upon which my opinion report on the Commission’s communication on a Community approach towards the eco-labelling of fisheries products is based."@en1
