". As Chair of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee, I welcome today's historic vote to open up the market in services across Europe. This is the final piece in the jigsaw of establishing the internal market. For too long, small and medium-sized enterprises have been prevented by ludicrous red tape from doing business in other EU Member States. With more than 53 cases before the European Court of Justice, where businesses are arguing for their right under the Treaty to provide services across Europe, it is time for us to set down rules for the operation of the service market. Parliament has listened to people's concerns and fears and ensured that the freedom to provide services is not the freedom to undermine citizens' employment terms and conditions and their rights as consumers. We want to end protectionism but protect working people and consumers. We were happy to vote for and support a compromise which delivered this critical balance of interests for citizens across the EU."@en1
