"Mr President, as we stated in the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, we are very concerned about this sugar reform and about the positions that the Council unfortunately adopted ahead of this debate. Our proposals in committee stressed the promotion of the principle of food sovereignty and safety, and the protection of farmers and the industry in regions and Member States experiencing difficulties. We also advocated an increase in production quotas, in countries in which there is a production shortfall in relation to consumption, as in the case of Portugal. Accordingly, we proposed, and continue to advocate, an increase in production quotas at the Coruche factory in Portugal to 120 000 tonnes of sugar beet, in order to guarantee economic viability, jobs and sugar beet production, given the good conditions in Portugal and the major shortfall in sugar production in relation to consumption."@en1
