Question No 35 by Inger Segelström ()
We note with concern that the democratisation process in Colombia is constantly being disrupted by disturbances in the country. We are also concerned about the continuing human rights violations there. The armed conflict is escalating and drug-trafficking is continuing on a large scale. This constitutes a serious obstacle to development and peace in Colombia. A number of Swedish voluntary organisations send personnel to Colombia to work on peace projects and projects to defend the rights of local and indigenous people, including land rights. This should be seen against the background of the fact that, as in many other Latin American countries, large corporations are expanding rapidly, as, particularly, is palm oil production by them. Will the Commission propose any special measures to support the democratisation process in Colombia?"@en1
