". Mr President, I have to say, speaking as rapporteur, that I am not in favour of the delay. All of us in this House have, for whatever reason, agreed on a timetable, and one of the stumbling blocks was that the Council will be discussing this topic next week and that we would like to make our contribution in good time, rather than when everything has been done and dusted. That I regard as unworthy of this House. If, then, we postpone the debate and the vote, we are not taking our work as a Parliament seriously. Moreover, I do not think that the final vote will be affected since the nominal lists have already been drawn up, so why do we not just go ahead and have the debate and the vote today? I share your view that the timetable leaves something to be desired. I would have preferred to vote this morning in plenary, but there was no majority support within the groups for this view. Had we done so, we would have at least achieved the majorities with all MEPs attending. Given that the vote has already been rescheduled three times, it is now, in my view, too late. Since we agreed on this timetable, the most important thing now, I think, is to close off this chapter with a debate and a vote."@en1
