"Mr President, I should first like to thank Mrs Doyle for the splendid job she has done. When you consider what we are up against and the way in which the fluorinated gas industry is lobbying us at the moment, it is simply hair-raising. They misinform us when they, for example, talk about its being more energy-efficient to use their poisonous gases. The fact is, just about all energy-efficient refrigerators, that is to say those rated AA+ and A++, use natural coolants rather than these gases. Nor is it the case that there are no alternatives.
By virtue of tough legislation and industry that is up-to-date and well disposed towards the environment, we in Denmark have in actual fact developed alternatives, and we can say that, in general, we are in a position to comply with the most stringent requirements. It would be completely scandalous if we were knocked back again by an old-fashioned sunset industry that thinks only of itself. Let me just say a word, finally, about mobile gases. When you consider how few countries in the world actually need air conditioning in cars, I do not see that there is any reason at all for there to be so much environmental pollution from this source. It is ludicrous that we cannot get something done about this too."@en1
