"The June List believes that the Member States themselves should be free to decide the shape of their immigration and asylum policies as long as these are in accordance with current international law. We do not wish to help create a Fortress Europe. Nor should it be for the European Parliament to lay down which laws should apply in this area.
We cannot therefore support the Council’s proposal, be it with or without the changes proposed by the report, and we have thus abstained from voting since the directive is part and parcel of devising a common policy for this area. We have however voted in favour of many of the committee’s amendments in order to emphasise our support for a refugee policy that is more humane than that expressed in the Council directive and that fulfils current standards laid down in international conventions."@en1
