lpv:spoken text	"Mr President, public transport is important to all our local communities. In Scotland, ferries provide an essential service to some of the European Union's most peripheral and vulnerable communities. This week I will be welcoming a delegation representing the CalMac trade unions to the European Parliament, who will be meeting the transport Commissioner on Wednesday. Presently these ferry services are being put out to tender in communities where they are the sole mode of transport connecting island communities to the mainland. Under the latest Commission proposals for land transport public service obligations, public administrations will be given flexibility over tendering processes and will be able to award certain services to in-house operators directly. Why, then, are lifeline ferries being treated differently to trains, trams and metros? There are no trains, trams and metros in Scotland's peripheral island communities. The position of the Commission would appear to be contradictory and I urge the Commission to clarify its position. Lifeline ferry services are too important to be ignored."@en1
