". That was one of the key issues when the EU-Turkey ministerial troika met in Ankara on 7 March. By coincidence, we held our troika meeting the day after the demonstration to which you referred. Once we saw what had happened and had obtained information, we issued a clear statement on behalf of the European Union, together with the Luxembourg presidency and the forthcoming UK presidency, in which we condemned all violence in demonstrations. We also condemned the disproportionate use of force, which was clearly being used in the treatment of the mainly female and young demonstrators in Istanbul. Foreign Minister Gul said in our troika meeting that he regretted the events and that the government will conduct an investigation into what happened, how and why. Three investigations are currently being carried out in Turkey: one by the police, one by the Ministry of the Interior and the third one by the Turkish Grand National Assembly. We are closely following them. Once the investigations are complete, we will have them at our disposal. In the meantime Turkey has suspended six policemen because of the events in Istanbul on 7 March."@en1
