". I understand your reason for asking this question. It is worthwhile in itself and therefore I am quite happy that the matter has been raised, because it gives me an opportunity to explain. We should not underestimate the importance of the facilities in Leixlip for the local economy. This is aid for a mobile manufacturing project, which will maintain a large number of jobs in the region for seven years, but will not create any new employment. To be quite frank, Ireland is an example that proves how important the European Union and our policy to stimulate the economy is. However, in this case no new jobs would be created. There is no indication that the project would lead to a transfer of any significant part of the company’s research and development base to Europe from the US, for example, or would develop other synergies or spillover effects, which would in turn contribute to innovation in Europe, going beyond the specific manufacturing operations concerned. This is a pure manufacturing project for the large-scale production of microchips that will help Intel to maintain its position as a leader in the relevant market. It was exactly the combination of those points and arguments that led us to think what we were thinking until the Irish Government withdrew the notification."@en1
