"Madam President, I am delighted that it appears we will have a large majority for this resolution in the European Parliament. A broad majority is the only way for Parliament to have political influence.
I feel that our influence consists of our having succeeded in our resolution in maintaining what is fundamental to the Lisbon Process, namely the balance between the three pillars of growth, social cohesion and environmental sustainability. I do not think that the original document from the Commission succeeded in doing this. It stated that growth was needed in order to achieve prosperity and environmental sustainability. That is true, but it also applies the other way around; in other words, we need social cohesion and must make long-term sustainable investments if we are to achieve long-term growth. What is important is for these to co-exist. If we in Parliament can effectively make this point to the Council and if it becomes policy in the future, then we shall have succeeded."@en1
