"I would like to begin by thanking all those who have spoken this morning and also the Chairman and members of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality who were present in New York for their efforts and their support for the Presidency. I would also like to thank the Commission for its support. As I have already exceeded my allotted time a little while ago, I will be very brief. So far as equal pay is concerned, we need more good examples that we can exchange. We also need indicators to measure both progress and lost ground. Poverty and social inclusion must remain one of the pillars of the Lisbon strategy in the same way as equality between men and women. I am in complete agreement with the European Parliament’s very committed fight against violence against women and children and, of course, the fight against human trafficking. I think we have an obligation to keep both men and boys better informed and educated if we want the differences between men and women to be respected. In my opinion, we will only really be able to respect human rights if we agree to consider and respect each other just as we are."@en1
