"Mr President, as a member of Parliament’s Observation Mission, I say to Mr Solana that I am now persuaded that the EU must consider using the leverage of trade as an influence for peace; that withdrawal from Gaza, leaving it under siege, can never be a viable solution for its population; that European and international aid workers must be allowed visas to work with Palestinian communities; and that we must assist reform of the Palestinian Authority. My abiding memories of the mission were that the most frequent word used by Palestinians was ‘humiliation’; that 30 to 40 villagers at Um Al Rehan were unable to vote because they lived on the wrong side of the security wall; that our Observation Mission itself was witness to beatings, shootings, kidnappings and bombings. Was the democratic organisation of these elections by the Palestinians a form of peaceful resistance to the occupation? Yes. Was this demonstration of democracy a message to the international community that they are absolutely ready to run their own state? Yes. And when ordinary Palestinians told us they were voting for Abu Mazen, yes, they said they were voting for peace."@en1
